Local know-how

Good to know in Greater Vancouver

  • Basement suites are common across Greater Vancouver. Vinyl plank goes straight over a prepared concrete slab and copes with the odd damp spot far better than wood.
  • Strata condos: planks with an attached acoustic pad help meet sound rules — check the rating with your strata first.
  • Rentals: water and scratch resistance means fewer repairs between tenants.

Is vinyl plank really waterproof?

The planks are. Water can still get underneath at the edges, so in bathrooms and laundry rooms the edges are sealed — and a big leak still needs drying out.

How flat does the subfloor need to be?

Flatter than for most floors. Rigid planks typically need the subfloor within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet — the exact limit is in the manufacturer’s instructions. We level the subfloor before installing.

Can vinyl plank go over tile?

Often, yes, if the tile is solid and flat and the grout lines are filled so they don’t show through.

Vinyl plank or laminate?

Vinyl plank is waterproof and quieter; laminate is harder and more scratch-resistant. For bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements, choose vinyl plank.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the area, the product and the subfloor. Typical installed price range per square foot goes here. After a free in-home visit you get a written quote.
