Options

Choosing laminate

  • Wear rating (AC)

Rated AC1 to AC5. AC3 suits busy homes; AC4 and up handles light commercial use.

  • Thickness

Usually 8–12 mm. Thicker boards feel more solid and sound quieter underfoot.

  • Water resistance

Standard laminate doesn’t like standing water. Water-resistant lines have sealed edges and are rated to handle spills for a set number of hours.

  • Texture

Embossed-in-register surfaces follow the printed grain, so boards look and feel more like real wood.

  • Underlay

Attached or separate. In condos the underlay must meet the strata’s sound rating.

Step by step

How the installation goes

  1. Acclimate

Boxes rest in the room before installation, as the manufacturer specifies.

  2. Prepare

Subfloor levelled; underlay and, over concrete, a vapour barrier rolled out.

  3. Install

Rows clicked together with staggered joints and a small expansion gap at every wall.

  4. Finish

Trims, transitions and stair nosings fitted; the room cleaned up.

Local know-how

Good to know in Greater Vancouver

  • Basements: over concrete, a vapour barrier under the underlay keeps ground moisture away from the boards.
  • Rentals and suites: laminate is hard-wearing and quick to install, so a unit is back in use sooner.
  • Strata: check your bylaws for underlay and sound rules before buying flooring.

Questions

Laminate flooring questions

Is laminate waterproof?

Most laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof. Spills wiped up quickly are fine; standing water can swell the core. For bathrooms and basements prone to water, vinyl plank is the safer choice.

Can laminate go over my existing floor?

Often, yes — over a flat, solid hard floor such as sheet vinyl or tile. Carpet always comes out first.

Can laminate be refinished?

No. Laminate can’t be sanded; a damaged board is replaced instead, so keep a few spare boards after installation.

Why is there a gap at the walls?

Floating floors need a small expansion gap around the edges so they can move with the seasons. Baseboards or quarter-round hide it.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the area, the product and the subfloor. Typical installed price range per square foot goes here. After a free in-home visit you get a written quote.
